About Virginia sailing

About Us

RECREATIONAL SAILING:

Every Sunday during the Fall and Spring season, we hold a Lake Day for our sailors to enjoy an afternoon on the water. Lake Days are the perfect opportunity for the inexperienced to learn the basics of sailing, or just an excuse to hang out at the lake. All experience levels are encouraged to come out on Sundays.

RACING:

Virginia has become a well respected team in the Mid Atlantic Inter-Collegiate Sailing Association (MAISA) over the past couple of years. We compete in regattas at all skill levels, including annually sailing to qualify for the National Championship. Please see our racing page for more information.

SOCIAL ACTIVITIES:

The sailing team organizes many social events throughout the year. We regularly have parties, movie nights, tailgates, and other team oriented activities throughout the entire school year.

Although this organization has members who are University of Virginia students and may have University employees associated or engaged in its activities and affairs, the organization is not a part of or an agency of the University. It is a separate and independent organization which is responsible for and manages its own activities and affairs. The University does not direct, supervise or control the organization and is not responsible for the organization’s contracts, acts or omissions.

Join Virginia Sailing

If you are interested in joining Virginia Sailing, contact our Commodore Katarina Catallo (kjc6mf@virginia.edu) about joining the team. We are always looking for new competitive skippers and crews, novices who want to learn, and recreational sailors looking for some water. Whether you are very experienced or just interested in learning how to sail, Virginia Sailing can help you.

MAILING LIST

The best way to keep abreast of team news, scheduled practices, and lake days is via the email list. To subscribe to this list, please visit the mailman website, and enter the subscription information.

PAY DUES:

Membership dues $130 for social members, and $200 for race team members. Not sure if you want to join? Come try out a lake day for $20 which can be deducted from your dues should you decide to join. Checks should be made payable to “Sailing Assoc. At UVA.” Dues include access to the team’s boats on lake days, transportation to and from practices and regattas, housing at regattas, and access to all team social activities.

COME TO A LAKE DAY:

Notices for lake days will be given on the mailing list. Generally racing practices will take place Fridays, leaving at 2PM from Hancock Circle (next to Old Dorms, on the cemetery side), and lakedays will occur on Saturdays, leaving Hancock circle at 11AM.

The Sailing Association at UVA is a student run club sport open to all UVA students of any skill level. We are an active group of sailors interested in racing, recreational sailing, and social events. We sail out of Lake Anna Yacht Club where we keep a fleet of nine Collegiate FJs and one 420, as well as a Carolina Skiff.

History

The Sailing Association has a long history of serving the sailing community of UVA. The Association was formed in the early 1970′s on Lake Monticello, where it remained for nearly thirty years before moving to the bigger Lake Anna. Over the years, the club has gone through a multitude of changes, but the members’ enthusiasm for sailing has remained constant. The club continues to serve the UVA community by providing the opportunity to sail, compete, and socialize, as it has since its inception.
